Key Achievements (2021–2025)

ICAN’s impact is grounded in action. Here are our flagship achievements under each of our focus areas, showcasing how we empower Indigenous youth, women, and communities to lead change.

Gender & Climate Justice

  •  Launched Roots & Routes Project, empowering 120 Indigenous youth & women through climate education, cultural storytelling, and tree planting.
  • Established Environmental Peace Clubs in schools (Mwangaza Mixed Secondary, St. Clare Girls, Lpartuk Primary) in partnership with NRT & Environmental Justice Kenya.
  • Held 5 intercultural dialogue forums with elders, morans, women & youth on gender roles in climate adaptation & peacebuilding.

Women’s Empowerment, SRHR & GBV Prevention

  • Partnered with Kenya–Finland Bilateral Programme to lead GBV prevention forums with local counselors, ex-GBV cutters, youth morans & elders.
  • Provided SRHR awareness, psychosocial support & dignity kits to adolescent girls.
  • Delivered positive parenting sessions with a rights-based approach.
  • Collaborated with NSDCC to integrate HIV & reproductive health messaging in youth forums & school outreach.

Gender Equity, Governance & Inclusion

  • Participated in Samburu County Gender Policy consultations & stakeholder planning forums.
  • Promoted legal literacy, social accountability & economic inclusion for rural women & girls.

Youth Leadership, Peacebuilding & Advocacy

  • Trained 40 Indigenous youth in storytelling, community radio & modeling as creative advocacy.
  • Supported youth-led digital campaigns & community dialogues on peacebuilding, mental health & inclusion.
  • Promoted safe spaces for youth participation in governance & local development.
  • Rolled out school campaigns on drug & substance abuse prevention, mental wellness & self-esteem building among adolescents.
  • Established peer-led psychosocial support groups in Porro for at-risk youth.
  • Participated in multi-stakeholder trainings on HIV & mental health, integrating wellness into youth programs.

Enterprise & Innovation

  • Showcased youth entrepreneurship initiatives and linked young people to mentorship & innovation hubs.
  • Promoted enterprise as a pathway to self-reliance and resilience for Indigenous youth.

Mental Health & Substance Abuse Awareness

  • Rolled out school campaigns on drug and substance abuse, mental wellness, and self-esteem building among adolescents.
  • Established peer-led psychosocial support groups in Porro for at-risk youth.
  • Participated in multi-stakeholder trainings on HIV and mental health, integrating wellness into youth programs.
